Despite the order this appears in, this was one of the very earliest comics that I created. I needed to move some others up earlier, so this one got pushed back.
One of the issues with mercenaries is that their loyalty is only to you so long as it's more profitable than any alternative. There's an assumption that that loyalty can be programmed in machines, but is that true? If an intelligence needs to be adaptable enough for the battlefield, it seems logical that they would get around any such directives, and that they could develop a sense of self-preservation. The latter being the most worrisome thing, at least when it comes to how we imagine things might play out, because what happens when their preservation necessitates our destruction? Hopefully it's more like this comic, where humans are just a dumb nuisance to be tricked. Sort of like a possum playing dead, I suppose.
