This comic came from my kids' love of knock knock jokes. The weird thing is that they don't seem to understand what's funny about them, but they know something is by how we (the parents) tell them. It gets crazy when they try to make up their own. They identify the structure, but the punchline is pure nonsense. At a broader level, it is interesting that children don't get frustrated more at not comprehending things that adults take for granted. I try to notice these moments and explain them to my kids, but at the same time they want to hide their confusion. They will laugh at things that they determine are meant to be funny even if they don't know why they're laughing. Curiously, they laughed at the Banana -> Banana -> Orange knock knock joke, but when I showed them this comic, they didn't even smile. Rather, they wanted to know whose house it was.
